The Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition welcomed two new members to the faculty and staff earlier this fall.  Dr. Sandra Bastin, department chair, remarked, “The department is fortunate to attract FIRST-rate individuals who are interested in going the extra mile to further students in their education and careers.”

Aaron SchwartzAaron Schwartz joined the Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition in August 2014 as a lecturer and was recently named as the director of the dietetic internship program. He holds both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in dietetics from UK. Prior to entering graduate school, Aaron completed his dietetics internship at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio and worked there as a clinical dietitian for almost three years. Aaron is a registered dietitian as well as a licensed dietitian. He is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Bluegrass Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. He also serves on the board of the Bluegrass District Dietetic Association as the President-Elect.

Amanda HegeAmanda Hege joined the Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition in September 2014 as the director of community outreach. She holds a bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition from the University of Cincinnati and completed her dietetic internship in the Sodexo Mid-Atlantic Dietetic Internship. Amanda worked for one year in the Episcopal Service Corps, a young adult service program, with a placement at Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. Following this position, she served as the nutrition services coordinator at Feeding America, the umbrella organization for a nationwide network of food banks. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and the Bluegrass Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (BGAND). She serves as membership chair in AND’s Hunger and Environmental Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group. As one of ten members selected for the Nutrition Solutions Working Group, Amanda is a participant in the Future of Food partnership between Feeding America, The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and The National Dairy Council. She is a registered dietitian and licensed dietitian in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
