Professional Profile

Dr. Nichole Huff is an Assistant Extension Professor of Family Finance and Resource Management in the Department of Family Sciences at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Huff’s work focuses improving the financial and mental wellbeing of individuals and families in and beyond the Commonwealth. Dr. Huff is a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) through the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) and a former chair of the NCFR CFLE Advisory Committee. She has devoted much of her career to applied family life education and community outreach.

As a trained family therapist, Dr. Huff’s work considers the biopsychosocial and neural effects of family processes, especially regarding healthy communication patterns and conflict resolution skills. Dr. Huff is a multidisciplinary family scholar whose applied research is designed to educate, equip, and strengthen human relationships. Research interests include financial resiliency, adaption, and coping; debt recovery and relationship restoration; family resource management; and the intersection of financial health and mental health. Dr. Huff has published various peer-reviewed manuscripts related to strengths-based communication, family coaching, interpersonal neurobiology, and effectively using online interfaces in family life and extension education.

Dr. Huff has contributed to numerous financial extension initiatives at University of Kentucky, including Managing in Touch Times (MITT) and MoneyWi$e, and co-authored the curriculum Building a Healthy Wealthy Future (BHWF), the youth component of the NIFA-USDA signature program Small Steps to Health and Wealth. The BHWF curriculum and accompanying extension publication series promotes youth financial literacy and the adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors. In the Department of Family Sciences, Dr. Huff teaches in the Consumer Economics and Financial Counseling (CEF) degree program.

Dr. Huff is a native of North Carolina and former chair of the North Carolina Parenting Education Network (NCPEN) and the eXtension Child and Family Learning Network (CFLN). Dr. Huff earned a faculty Diversity Champion Award for her advocacy work around diversity inclusion education at NC State University. She brings this dedication to enhancing family wellbeing, financial resiliency, and diversity awareness to the University of Kentucky and Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service.
