The School of Human Environmental Sciences is pleased to welcome Dr. Cherry Kay Smith as the Extension Curriculum Specialist with Family and Consumer Sciences Extension. Dr. Smith comes to this position from Ivy Tech Community College where she held various administrative positions during her 19-year career. Prior to joining Ivy Tech, Dr. Smith served as instructional designer in the Kentucky Department of Education and as a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher in Hardin and Carroll counties.

Dr. Smith’s roots are firmly tied to Cooperative Extension. She began her career as a Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent in Edmonson and Breckinridge counties. As a youth in Barren County, she was active in 4-H. She saw first-hand how her family and community benefitted from Extension programs.

Dr. Smith brings a strong knowledge and passion for instructional design to her new position. She has developed curricula and instructional materials for learners at all levels, including strategies and tools for assessing learning and program effectiveness. Further, she has presented nationally on assessment/evaluation related challenges facing higher education.

Dr. Ann Vail, Director, School of Human Environmental Sciences and Assistant Director, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension, shared, “We are excited to have Cherry Kay join our staff. Her experience in program planning, instructional design, and assessment will be valuable as we develop new programs to better serve the people of Kentucky.”
