The University of Kentucky chapter of the American Association of Family Consumer Sciences (UK-AFCS) is a club dedicated to the disciplines in family and consumer sciences. Students in all majors in the School of Human Environmental Sciences are invited to join, and the organization provides linkages to professionals in the in the field.
Members of UK-AFCS are active in the statewide student unit of the Kentucky Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (KAFCS), an affiliate of the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). KAFCS serves as the Commonwealth's voice for the Family and Consumer Sciences profession, integrating knowledge from diverse fields to assist with the solving of everyday problems for families. Members work toward empowering people to improve their quality of life.
Each year, UK-AFCS coordinates a fall festival in support of families who have a child with autism. Members of UK-AFCS volunteer for charities and events that occur throughout the year in the Lexington area. One highlight this fall was participation in the Thanksgiving Basket Brigade at God’s Pantry Food Bank. Professional trips provide exposure to a variety of careers in human environmental sciences. This year, UK-AFCS has taken trips to Good Shepherd Cheese and the Jefferson County Public Schools Nutrition Service Center.
