Phi Upsilon Omicron (Phi U) is a national honor society for family and consumer sciences/human environmental sciences.  The organization was founded in 1910 at the University of Minnesota and today includes more than 95,000 members in collegiate and alumni chapters.

The Iota Chapter at the University of Kentucky was established in 1922.  Students from all majors in the School of Human Environmental Sciences* are considered for membership, and there is an active alumni chapter at UK.   Phi U seeks to develop the leadership qualities and the professionalism that are essential to success post-graduation. This is accomplished through completing projects in the community that are related to issues found in the School of Human Environmental Sciences.

What is needed to get involved?

  • Undergraduates-Cumulative GPA of 3.0 /40 credit hours earned (at least 12 hours at UK)
  • Graduate Students-Cumulative GPA of 3.2/ 12 Graduate hours at UK
  • Strong sense of community service
  • Great potential for leadership

The purpose of Phi U is to recognize and encourage academic excellence within students.  To develop qualities of professional and personal leadership, provide opportunities for service to the profession and encourage professional and personal commitment to the area of family and consumer sciences.
