The article (found at http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/worklife/08/19/cb.unusual.majors.jobs/index.html) states that "an uncommon degree could put you in a great position to find a job in an emerging, unique or specialized field." But what exactly is Family and Consumer Sciences? And what can it do for you?

At the University of Kentucky, family and consumer sciences programs are encompassed in the School of Human Environmental Sciences (HES).  The School of HES offers six undergraduate degree programs, four master's degree programs, and a Ph.D. in Family Studies. The undergraduate programs include degrees in:

  • Family Science;
  • Career and Technical Education - Family and Consumer Sciences emphasis;
  • Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles;
  • Human Nutrition;
  • Dietetics;  and
  • Food Science.

Academic programs in the School of Human Environmental Sciences prepare students for professional positions serving the needs of individuals and families.  Career options for graduates include health education; nutrition and/or financial counseling; fashion design and/or marketing; hotel, restaurant and tourism management; middle and high school teaching; adult education; and more.
