Each year, the College Student Council recognizes outstanding teachers with an Early Career award for a faculty member with less than 7 years of experience, and a Career award for a faculty member with 7 or more years of experience. This year, the Student Council recognized Dr. Tammy J. Stephenson from the Dept of Nutrition and Food Science as the 2008 recipient of the Early Career Outstanding Teacher Award.
Dr. Stephenson received her B.S. in Food Science and Human Nutrition in 1997 and the Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Kentucky in 2001. She has been with the Department of Nutrition and Food Science since 2001. She teaches a variety of nutrition classes from freshman to the graduate level and is recognized as an excellent teacher by her students. Dr. Stephenson is also an academic advisor to over 60 students and is Faculty advisor for the Tri-Delta Sorority and the UK Student Dietetic Association.
Student nominators shared the following remarks about Dr. Stephenson.
- “Dr. Stephenson takes learning to another level by encouraging class discussions, working through case studies, using informative visual aids, and most importantly, keeping students up-to-date on real-world issues affecting their future professions.”
- “Dr. Stephenson will recognize when her students are struggling and will literally request them to come visit during her office hours.”
