School of HES Honors 2018 Students of Excellence and Distinction recipients

  

The School of Human Environmental Sciences recognized ten outstanding students through the presentation of the 2018 Student of Excellence and Student of Distinction Awards on April 27, 2018. The awards program, established in 2006, honors both undergraduate and graduate students.  Undergraduates are nominated based on academic excellence, leadership, and service in the School of Human Environmental Sciences and the community. Graduate students are nominated based on their research or creative works, leadership and service in the School and the community. Undergraduate Student of Excellence honorees are selected for each degree program. Graduate Student of Excellence honorees are selected at each degree level within each department. Overall Student of Distinction honors are presented at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  

 

The 2018 Student of Excellence recipients were:

  • Gretchen Trumbo, Undergraduate Student of Excellence in Dietetics
  • Amy Groswald, Undergraduate Students of Excellence in Human Nutrition
  • Kyle Anderson, Undergraduate Student of Excellence in Hospitality Management and Tourism
  • Kristina Rosen, Undergraduate Student of Excellence in Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles
  • Jordan Bressler, Master’s Student of Excellence for the Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition
  • Allison Goderwis, Master’s Student of Excellence for the Department of Family Sciences
  • Maame Afua Offeibea Adu, Graduate Student of Excellence for the Department of Retailing and Tourism Management
  • Magda Javakhishvili, Doctoral Student of Excellence for the Department of Family Sciences

 

Michaela Mineer, a senior majoring in family sciences with a double-major in communications and minor in community and leadership development, was named the 2018 Undergraduate Student of Distinction. Michaela maintained an excellent academic standing throughout her undergraduate program. She received numerous scholarships at the college and university levels, including the University of Kentucky Presidential Scholarship. Michaela was an instrumental leader in Phi Upsilon Omicron Iota Chapter, the UK Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and Cats for Christ. She served as a College of Agriculture, Food and Environment Ambassador for four years and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Following graduation, Michaela will pursue a master’s degree in public administration at American University.

 

Gabriela Ksinan Jiskrova, a doctoral student in family sciences, was honored as the Graduate Student of Distinction. During her tenure as a doctoral student, she has been an active leader in UK’s Graduate Student Congress, serving as the organizations president and vice president. In addition, she was appointed by the Provost to serve on the Blue Ribbon Panel on Graduate Education. Gabriela has been both a research assistant and teaching assistant in the Department of Family Sciences, as well as a primary instructor for three semesters. Her research accomplishments include co-authoring six peer-reviewed journal articles and being part of sixteen national and international conference presentations. She has received numerous funding awards, including the Lyman T. Johnson Fellowship and the Faculty Fellows Award through Presentation U at UK.

 

In addition to the Students of Excellence and Distinction, six graduate students in the School were recognized for receiving the Alice P. Killpatrick Fellowship:

  • Allison Goderwis, master’s student in the Department of Family Sciences; 
  • Djidjoho Gnonhossou, doctoral student in the Department of Family Sciences;
  • Katelyn Eubank, master’s student in the Department of Retailing and Tourism Management;
  • Kelci McHugh, master’s student in the Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition;
  • Jakub Mikuska, doctoral student in the Department of Family Sciences; and
  • Kelly Zhang, doctoral student in the Department of Family Sciences.
