In May 2011, UK students have a unique opportunity to participate in a study tour to the Ukraine, which will focus on family and intimate relationships in a post-Soviet society. The tour, organized and led by Dr. Jason Hans, associate professor in the Department of Family Studies, will provide the opportunity to explore the relationship between family life and socioeconomic structures in the Ukraine, Europe's largest country.
Dr. Hans is currently working in the Ukraine through the Fulbright Scholar award. This assignment provides him with a distinctive opportunity to plan a broad array of experiences for students. Through his Fulbright position, Dr. Hans is teaching classes at Odessa National University and conducting research related to family and sexuality issues.
Highlights of the May 10-31 study tour will include:
- Exploring Soviet and post-Soviet family life.
- Touring and examining the human impact of Chernobyl, where the world's largest nuclear accident occurred.
- Visiting an orphanage to learn about the circumstances that leave Ukrainian children homeless.
- Examining the country's domestic and international marriage markets.
- Visiting medieval castles and palaces.
- Touring Kiev, Lviv, the colorful and uniquely energetic seaside city of Odessa, and the exotic Crimean peninsula.
