Summer is a busy time for HES students to complete internships. This series will spotlight students and their intern experiences
Natalie Updike Name: Natalie Updike

Major: Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles

Internship Location: GRACESHIP®

What is your typical day as an intern?  I keep up with daily tasks, such as checking emails and posting to social media accounts. I also work on specific projects depending upon our focus at the time.

How are you applying classroom knowledge in your internship?   I have used knowledge that I gained from most, if not all, of the MAT classes, as well as the classes that I took to complete my business minor.

What is one key thing you have learned during your internship?  I have improved my communication skills, and I have learned how to successfully conduct business using email and phone conversations. Since GRACESHIP is an online business, it is a necessity that we are able to keep up with all business using forms of communication other than face-to-face.

What advice would you share with other students who are preparing to complete an internship?  The main piece of advice that I would give to students preparing to complete their internship is to pitch out ideas to your boss if or when you have one.  Don't be afraid to ask questions. Most supervisors will be glad to know that you care enough about what you are doing to ask questions and be involved.
