Name: Jennifer Pachuta

Major: Merchandising, Apparel & Textiles

Internship Location: Galls Inc.

What is your typical day as an intern?

During the first week of my internship, I arrived at 8 am and followed a schedule that has been made for me by my supervisor. I am getting to know everyone in the department, and the heads of the other departments (sales, HR, Inventory Management/Buying, etc.).  I have also attended a few vendor meetings as well as a few turnover meetings.

How are you applying classroom knowledge in your internship?

Because I am interning in the Merchandising Department, a lot of things that I have learned in school are being applied here as well. For example, inventory management and a lot of the mathematical terms I learned about in MAT-315 are being used, as well as terms used to describe shipping and vendors have been used as well.

What is one key thing you have learned during your internship?

I am looking to furthering my knowledge and experience while helping Galls put together their fall 2014 catalog. I am looking forward to learning about pagination of the catalog and what all that entails. I am also looking forward to attending meetings with my supervisor(s) to learn more about vendor relationships and about how to get the best compromise when working with different vendors.

What advice would you share with other students who are preparing to complete an internship?

Apply to a lot of places because it is a lot harder to find one than you may think. I would also share that, for me, the internship experience was about learning and seeing all that goes into graduating with the major I have selected. I would tell future interns to apply to places where the most learning can be done, not necessarily a place where it's all about the "name" or "brand".
