Used denim garments like jeans and jackets can have a new life through a special recycling program sponsored by Cotton Incorporated. The Cotton. From Blue to GreenTM denim recycling program is underway on college campuses this fall, including at the University of Kentucky. This marks the fifth year that the UK Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles Club (MAT) has participated in the program.
Meredith Cinnamon, graduate student in Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles, shared, "The Cotton Incorporated Denim Drive is a great project that allows us as students to gain experience in planning and coordinating events, as well as give back to the community. We hope to continue to increase our collection amount for the Fall 2012 Denim Drive."
Collection bins are currently located in Erikson Hall and Ag. Science Building North, and collections will continue until November 1. In 2011, the MAT Club contributed over 15,000 pairs of jeans to the program. This contribution diverted more than 11 tons of waste from landfills and provided enough fiber to manufacture insulation for 30 homes.
