Summer is a popular time for students in the School of Human Environmental Sciences to complete their internships. This series will spotlight student interns.
Student: Collin Doherty, Hospitality, Management & Tourism
Internship Location: Keeneland Association, Communications Department, Lexington
What is your typical day as an intern? On a typical day as an intern I attend meetings with clients to prepare for their events. I can set up events (tables, chairs, linens, etc.) or I am a contact for the day of the event for clients and vendors. No day is ever the same. During a typical work week I will meet a lot of new and interesting people. I also enjoy the people I work with in the office.
What is one of the things you learned as a student that you use often as an intern? I utilize my communications skills that I learned as a student. Being able to communicate properly to many different types of people is crucial for this job.
What is one piece of advice you would give to students preparing for their internship? I would recommend that students be prepared for anything. Do not be afraid to get your hands dirty and be willing to do whatever you can do to help your employer and most importantly your guests/clients.
Additional Comments: Keeneland is a great place to have an internship. Whether it’s the marketing department, events, accounting or events with Turf Catering, the people here are great and there is so much to do. I would recommend Keeneland as an internship location to everyone.
