A curriculum developed through Kentucky Cooperative Extension is now available nationally. The Communities Support Military Families curriculum was created by UK Family and Consumer Sciences Senior Extension Specialist Dr. Carole Gnatuk. The curriculum began as a lesson for the Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association to promote an emphasis in support of local military families. The initial materials have been revised and expanded for use nationally with Extension clientele.
Dr. Gnatuk commented, “The curriculum is a community capacity building program, designed to help community residents reach out to military families around them in practical, neighborly ways. Research shows that intentional, informal, consistent outreach strengthens the resilience of military families very well. Community agencies and organizations are valuable to coordinate and encourage neighborly actions.”
Dr. Brent Elrod, National Program Leader for Military and Veteran Programs with USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, recently shared the new resources nationally with Extension personnel.
