Summer is a busy time for HES students to complete internships. This series will spotlight students and their intern experiences

Sam FieldsName: Sam Fields

Major:  Hospitality Management

Internship Location:  Homewood Suites-Cincinnati Airport/Florence, Kentucky

What is your typical day as an intern? Every day is different and presents a new set of challenges. After all, this is the hospitality industry. With that said, on a daily basis I am learning hands on from co-workers and management and shadowing others in various departments within the hotel.

How are you applying classroom knowledge in your internship?

The knowledge I have gained from the classroom has laid the framework for how I carry myself throughout my internship.  In a sense, my internship is just the beginning, and the hotel industry is a new business for me to work in. However, thanks to the knowledge I have taken away from the classroom, I find myself comfortable talking with management about taking necessary steps to maximize room revenues and sales.

What is one key thing you have learned during your internship?

You can never ask too many questions. There is much to learn from everyone within the organization, no matter the position.

What advice would you share with other students who are preparing to complete an internship?

Go in to your internship with an open mind and be ready to learn.
