Leila SanaiName: Leila Sanai

Major: Hospitality Management and Tourism

Expected Graduation Date: December, 2016

Internship Location: The Coffee Pub in Lexington, KY

Please describe your typical day as an intern:

After I opened the store each morning, I counted the money in the drawers, verified the specials with the chef, and changed the specials in our computer system. After these routine tasks were completed, I would help out in other areas. I assisted with many tasks, including payroll, working with other employees, handling customer complaints, and closing the store at the end of the night. Since I chipped in wherever I was needed, each day allowed me to see new aspects of the business and hospitality realm.

How did you use and apply classroom knowledge in your internship?

During my internship, I used the business and management skills that I was taught in my classes. For instance, when I was managing inventory, I would apply excess supplies into the specials for that specific day. I also used my knowledge of how to price items so that it covered ingredient expenses and still appealed to consumers. These management tools that I learned in the classroom gave me the confidence I needed to fulfill my responsibility of managing the daily specials at The Coffee Pub.

What is one key thing you learned during your internship?

A key thing that I learned is how to communicate effectively. I learned that in order for a workplace to run smoothly it is essential to have an excellent flow of communication between everyone on the staff.

If you could share one piece of advice for other students who are preparing to complete an internship, what would it be?

When I entered my first managerial role this summer, I found myself nervous. I quickly realized that it’s normal to be nervous. My advice to anyone in the same situation is to be confident in your abilities and to remember that you were hired for a reason. Your employer saw potential in you, and this is a chance for you to grow. With that being said, always asks questions and absorb everything around you! An internship is a great learning experience. You will gain many skills that will help prepare you for your career after college.
